First in secondary education in The Netherlands, later at university, and thereafter also in engineering practice, I have been teaching extensively. This was always without formal training, intuitively transferring what I knew—and knew how to do—to other students, sometimes well above my age. In my formal lecturer training, which I took in Copenhagen and Odense, I have been introduced to active learning and student participation in education. These principles have been part of my teaching ever since.

I have taught, held lectures, and assisted architects and engineering students at various schools and universities including UCL, The Bartlett, and the Architectural Association in London; ITU and CITA in Copenhagen; The Berlage Institute and TU Delft in The Netherlands; UFC-DAU in Fortaleza; Mackenzie University in São Paulo.

Teaching

2023 - ongoing
For our new MSc programme I am teaching a new course called Advanced Finite Element Analysis. The course is mandatory for both the computational design and the structural mechanics tracks of the MSc. The course takes the starting point in a Python FE solver as a scaffold for understanding the underlying theory. The theory is complemented by a project in Abaqus.
2021 - ongoing
In 2021, together with Nebojsa Jakica and Roberto Naboni, I was awarded a Spearhead grant from the SDU University Spearhead Project Fund. We have implemented the use of virtual and augmented reality in our design studio education.
For more, see Portfolio.
2021 - ongoing
Building Technology is an introductory course I designed. I now teach it in the second semester (spring) of the BSc in civil engineering. The topics are broadly (1) Design Process and Design Technology; (2) Building Materials; (3) Building Structures; (4) Facades; (5) Indoor Climate.

Guest lecturers include Márcio Sequeira on working with Mola Structural System, Isak Worre Foged on integrative design of buildng envelopes, Yasuhiro Kaneda on structural engineering with timber, Pelle Munch-Petersen on working with the building material pyramid.
2020 - ongoing
Studio 1 is a studio I designed. It introduces students to the built environment as the context of design. Sustainable practice is introduced from the very start, with an emphasis on circular building through adaptable and loose-fit approaches.

The studio is taught together with Kåre Stokholm Poulsgaard from 3XN/GXN in Copenhagen. Guest lecturers include Casper Østergaard Christensen (3XN), Jonas Høg (Peikko), Susan Carruth (GXN), Kenn Clausen (GXN), Lasse Lind (GXN), Emma Gains (Arup), Frank Jensen (Søren Jensen Consulting Engineers), Stefanie Weidner (Werner Sobek).
2020 - 2022
LTP, the Lecturer Training Programme, is an individually planned training programme for university teachers at SDU that I took part in. The programme requires approximately 270 hours of work and includes courses, teaching supervision, and a development project.
2019 - 2020
Starting in 2019, a new BSc programme in bygningsteknik (civil and architectural engineering) was given shape through a number of workshops and ongoing content-group collaborations. The development went from a basic set of criteria to an overall philosophy and the outline learning goals of each course in the programme. The teaching started in 2020.
